Over 300 past alumni of Columbia Union High School/Columbia High School attended the annual reunion held June 2 at Henkle Middle School gymnasium.
High school alumni who have been out of school 40 years or longer are invited each year, on the first Saturday in June, to a gathering which begins with an afternoon of visiting from 2 to 5 p.m., a business meeting from 5 to 6, followed by a dinner at 6 p.m.
This year the Class of 1972 was invited to celebrate its 40th reunion at the annual Alumni Reunion. The class responded by having a nice group in attendance, with Mike Yarnell speaking for the class during the evening.
Jack Kapp, president of the C H S Alumni Association, conducted the business meeting and introduced honored classes and guests.
Hugh Whitson, chairman of the Columbia Alumni School Permanent Endowment (CASPE), spoke about the CASPE fund and announced alumni were giving six $1,500 scholarships this year to qualifing seniors. Jerry Lewis, superintendent of White Salmon Schools, was also a guest speaker.
The C H S Alumni Association was formed to promote higher education by providing scholarships to high school seniors to help with college expenses. To date, the CASPE fund maintained by the group, has awarded $120,150 in scholarships.
