The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center's Lewis and Clark Bicentennial exhibit Cargo has been fully funded thanks to a cap-stone grant made by JELD-WEN Foundation.
The grant of $82,675 completes the $609,000 fundraising campaign that began in 2002. It also makes available two large matching grants that were awarded earlier this year by Meyer Memorial Trust for $110,000 and M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for $150,000.
"This is a great way to end the year and we are immensely grateful to all the sponsors that are going to make this exhibit happen," said Executive Director Ken Karsmizki.
The exhibit, depicting and interpreting the 30 tons of equipment and supplies carried on the expedition for consumption, trade, and gift-giving, will open in its entirety in May, 2004.
Phase one of the exhibit, comprised of Indian Presents and the Kids Explorer Room opened to the public in October. The exhibit is endorsed by Oregon Tourism Commission and Lewis and Clark Bicentennial in Oregon. It will remain on display through the summer of 2005.
Other contributors include USDA Forest Service, Collins Foundation, National Park Service Challenge Cost Share Program, Oregon Heritage Commission, PGE Foundation, Oregon Historic Trails Fund of Oregon Community Foundation, Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation, the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust, and individual donors.
