Nearly 100 harriers were in action under sunny skies for the Wheatfield 3k, 8k and half marathon this past Saturday at Petersburg School in The Dalles.
In all three races, the participants put up solid marks, and there were differences of less than a minute and two minutes in the 1-2 spots of every event.
“The weather was great for running,” said race coordinator Bob Thouvenel. “It was cool at first, but it warmed up near the end of the half marathon race. This was just a nice morning and early afternoon for running.”
Sawyer Bogard came away on top for first-place honors in the 3k race, as he timed out in 14 minutes and 43 seconds, close to a minute ahead of Matthew Gray, who had a 15:40.
Kevin Edwards added third-place honors at 16:05, Mikayla Kelly followed up with a 17:33 to secure fourth place, and Dezi Remington placed fifth overall amongst the field of 24 men and women.
Ashley Tremblay (20:33), Jacob Gray (21:03), Travis Gray (21:04), Marsha Morrison (23:31), Erin Gray (23:31), Gretchen Von Lubken (25:50), Ellie Brock (25:58), Traci Brock (26:01), Grace Neal (27:20) and Tiffany Hillman (28:37) rounded out the top-15.
Gary Daubenspeck breezed through the 8k event with a time of 29:39, clinching first place by close to two minutes ahead of Jeff Trapold, who had a time of 31:39.
Will Nuckoles had a time of 34:34 for third place, Clint Bogard added fourth place at 38:26 and Justin Brock had a mark of 38:45 for fifth place in the standings.
Scott Bryant (40:15), Ronald Harper (41:27), Roberts Nuckoles (42:30), Judy Richardson (43:31), Paul Kelly (44:25) and Cindy Berkshire (45:50) finished off the rest of the 35 8k signees.
In a true test of strength and endurance came in the half marathon, where the top-5 ended up with times of less than an hour and 40 minutes.
Charlie Remington has been a dominant presence on the racing circuit over the past five years, and he showed another gear in the half marathon with a time of 1:21.36, 27 seconds out in front of second-place winner, Jarren Seal, who timed out in 1:22.03.
Dan Donovan placed third in 1:31.42, Jennifer Balcom added a 1:35.36 for the best female outcome, and Erin Ford grabbed fifth-place recognition with her final marker of 1:35.51.
Leanne Neal was good for sixth place with her 1:39.12, Paul Jones tallied seventh at 1:39.13 and Asalia Valdez had a 1:39.23 to score eighth place.
Ken Stickney (1:41.32), Brian Strassheim (1:43.34) and Natalie Irzyk (1:46.55), Jennifer Wardell (1:47.22), Darryl Houghtelling (1:50.02), Andrew Grossman (1:52.34) and Eliz Hernandez (1:52.39) finalized the group of 38 long-distance runners.
Up next is the Cherry Festival 3k, 5k and 10k fundraiser run/walk by Dry Hollow Elementary School in The Dalles.
The race starts at 8 a.m., and is open for men, women and children of all ages.
Costs are set at $20 with a shirt, and $5 without a shirt by the pre-registration date of April 21.
On the day of, costs are $25 with a shirt and $10 without a shirt.
There are awards offered for the top-3 runners in each age division.
