THE DALLES golfer Iliana Telles chips onto the green in a tournament played earlier this season. Friday at the Special District 2 championships at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Redmond, the Riverhawk sophomore shot a 76 to advance to the 5A state tournament.
For the second consecutive season, The Dalles golfer Iliana Telles is headed to state.
The Riverhawk sophomore carded 76 on the second day for a two-day total of 155 to secure the fifth slot out of 10 at the Class 5A Special District 2 championships at Eagle Crest Golf Course, on the Ridge Course in Redmond.
“It was fun to watch her improve,” said TD head coach Dan Telles. “She is beginning to understand how to take different kinds of shots, how to understand distances and what club to use at each distance. To see her improve and drop her scores like the rest of the girls, it is fun to watch. She is having more fun as well. Just getting to state is icing on the cake.”
Three-time state champion Madison Odiorne shot a 144 to secure an individual district championship, as she was six strokes ahead of Pendleton’s Haley Greb and Crater’s Kiana Oshiro, who each carded a 150 for a second-place tie.
Summit claimed its seventh straight district crown with a 655 and Bend was second after a 719. Ridgeview (752) and Pendleton (758) rounded out the other schools to earn state invitations.
Because of a scorecard signing mishap, Hermiston (773) slipped to sixth in the standings.
Originally, Hermiston was in the third spot and Ridgeview was fourth, but the disqualification vaulted Pendleton into the final state slot and left Hermiston on the outside looking in.
The Dalles 419-407-826, finished seventh in the 11-team field.
Abby Walker carded a 98-107 and a 205 for the Riverhawks’ next best score.
Laney Schanno followed up her first-day total of 120 with a personal-record 113 for her 233 and first-year golfer, Brooke McCall had a 126 and 111 to notch a 237.
On the second day, McCall shot a 47 on the front-nine and a 64 on the final nine holes.
Jennifer Bonham had a 122 on the first day and added a 135 Friday.
Coach Telles was not looking at the district scores as a gauge in what he saw from the team through the season.
In every tournament, at least one player shot personal records.
He has the luxury of having every player return next season.
“These girls are athletes who want to get better. They did get better,” the Riverhawk coach said. “They did a fantastic job. It is exciting for next year and in the future. They learned the game and started making better contact with the ball and they learned their distances. They did a great job and it was fun to have them this year.”
Iliana Telles has nine calendar days to prepare for the OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires State Championships at Trysting Tree in Corvallis on May 18-19.
Last year, Telles placed eighth overall with a 176 on a much tougher course at Emerald Valley Country Club in Creswell.
“The course isn’t as tough as last years, but it still presents its new challenges,” coach Telles said. “Either way, you still got to hit the shots. Although it may seem easier, if you are not precise, it could come back to hurt you.”
