THE DALLES sophomore Iliana Telles measures up her putt attempt in a league match played this season at The Dalles Country Club. Tuesday, Telles capped her second consecutive state berth with a 155 to chalk up a tie for fourth place honors at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
The Dalles sophomore Iliana Telles posted a birdie and six pars on the final nine holes for a 76 and a two-day total of 155 to finish in a fourth-place tie at the OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab state girl’s golf tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club Tuesday in Corvallis
“I was hoping that she would finish well and she did a lot better in the second day,” said TD head coach Dan Telles. “She knew going in that it was going to be tough. It was important for her to keep her head in the game and hit the ball well. For the most part, she was able to do that.”
Summit’s Madison Odiorne tied for state title score with a record 140 and was the state’s first golfer with four individual championships.
The senior finished tied for the individual title with Crater’s Daniele Giles.
Pendleton’s Haley Greb shot a 147 for third place and Corvallis’ Halle Creswick carded a 155 for a fourth-place tie with Iliana Telles.
Staked by the second-day 72 from Odiorne, Summit won the team title with a 628, beating Bend and Wilsonville (716) by 88 strokes.
Pendleton High School was in fourth place with its 730, and Ridgeview had a 749 for fifth place.
On the first day, Telles had 12 pars, five bogeys and a double bogey for a 79 on her scorecard to grab sixth place, 11 strokes behind Odiorne, who shot a four-under par 68.
In her first round, the Riverhawk sophomore played in a group that had golfers shoot 100, 112 and 119, so her rhythm was off.
On the second day, Telles improved by three strokes with 10 pars, two birdies and six bogeys.
“It makes a big difference. It challenges you mentally, so you have to be focused on your shot. It was a challenging day, but she did fine,” coach Telles said. “Today, she had a better rhythm. She was playing with girls who were the best in the state and I think it helped her find her groove a little bit.”
In her first two seasons, Iliana Telles placed eighth in 2014 with a 176 at Emerald Valley Country Club, and cut down 21 strokes this week at Trysting Tree.
Coach Telles has a plan to work on the short game to keep the progression going into next season.
“The biggest thing is she is having fun. She is having fun with it,” coach Telles said. “She was a decent golfer, but this year, she got better. She had better scores and was having more fun. If she continues to put in the work, I think she catch some of these other girls.”
Summit will continue to be a perennial powerhouse for years to come, but in looking at some of the scores, coach Telles believes his core group of returners can jump into the mix very soon.
Brooke McCall, Laney Schanno, Abby Walker, Jennifer Bonham have solid foundation in place to join Iliana Telles for extended golf in late May.
“Nobody is going to catch Summit. They are that good,” coach Telles said. “But for second place, I think our girls can definitely get there. If the keep practicing and working on their game, they definitely have the skills to get there. They showed improvement this year and they have already shown that they are willing to work, so it is doable.”
