Members of The Dalles ski team took on double the action this past weekend and racked up eight top-13 finishes for a pair of races on Shooting Star Ridge on the slopes of Mount Hood meadows.
Amongst the two groups, Eli Holeman jumped to the top ranks with two top-5 awards, and on the girl’s side, Timarra Roth burst on the scene with a sixth and 10th place output for her efforts.
“All-in-all, it was a great day for The Dalles Ski Team,” said long-time head coach Jeff Cordell.
Participants kicked off the day for the giant slalom, a two-run, standard type race.
Holeman paced the boys’ squad with fifth place, as he thrust forward with a first run of 27.16 seconds and he capped this event with a marker of 27.63 for a 54.79, less than three seconds behind overall winner, Austin Keillor (51.88), out of Hood River Valley.
Preston Klindt continued his consistent performance with rallies of 28.72 and 29.33 to seal 11th place in a solid 58.05.
Martin Carter scored 13th place on the day with 1:00.49, Griffin Martin reeled off a 1:05.75 in two runs to grab 24th place and Christopher Montecalvo ended up with a 37.14 in his second attempt to lock down a 1:16.67 for 34th place in the standings, out of the 49 racers.
William Brewer only completed one run on the day and had a top-15 marker of 30.28, but did not complete his final try.
Hood River Valley amassed a combined time of 2:41.57 to rap out first place on the team front, besting The Dalles, who had a 2:53.33.
Sandy (2:58.81), Cleveland (3:01.12) and Grant High School (3:03.77) rounded out the order of finish.
“The boy’s team all skied fast and took second place in the team standings,” Cordell said. “The GS on Shooting Star Ridge turned out to be just a tuck race. It was a very short 27 seconds and left no room for errors. The results were very close. Very few kids had trouble.”
Led by the times put out by Lucy McLean (53.28), Hood River Valley lapped the girl’s field in first place in 2:50.77.
St. Mary’s Academy (2:58.82), Grant (3:12.56), Sandy (3:19.63), Cleveland (3:26.45) and The Dalles (3:30.90) capped the standings.
Roth started out her GS run with a marker of 31.13 and then she hit on all cylinders to a rally of 30.42 to grab a two-time total of 1:01.55.
“Timarra Roth skied to 10th place, a good finish for her,” Cordell said.
Robin Pashek (1:09.03) ended up in the middle of the pack of the 64 participants and Emma Diede tapped out in 40.72 and 39.60 for a 1:20.32.
Slalom run brings quick times
In the slalom event, the final one of the season, ski racers reeled off high marks in this one-run race.
Hood River Valley (1:54.94) picked up first place in the girls’ standings. St. Mary’s Academy (2:20.45), Cleveland (2:42.71), The Dalles (2:43.65) and Sandy (2:48.30) capped the field.
McLean tacked on double duty and won her slalom race in 35.2 seconds, toppling her next competitor and teammate, Claire Davies (38.7) by more than three seconds.
Roth had the lowest tally of her career to pace The Dalles to notch sixth place in 43.0 seconds.
Diede finished 31st in 58.7 and Pashek ended her work day with a run of 1:02.0.
Given the challenge, Cordell was impressed with what he saw from his team.
“The slalom course was set very straight and quick, and proved to be quite challenging for the field of skiers. We saw lots of girls crash and even witnessed a collision between racers.”
Once again, Keillor rattled off top honors to lead the boys’ outcomes in 31.6, a few ticks ahead of TD’s Holeman.
The Riverhawk veteran tallied 80 points for his squad with a time of 33.2.
Klindt, Carter and Brewer all followed up Holeman with each reeling off personal bests.
In his second event of the afternoon, Klindt had a marker of 41.1 to place sixth place.
Carter ended up in 12th place with his 45.2, and Brewer, a first-year participant, motored his way to 16th place and had a time of 47.9 seconds.
Montecalvo (1:00.5) placed 26th and Martin ended up in 27th place after timing out at 1:04.0.
Hood River Valley took top honors for the boys with a combined 1:50.31, just out in front of the Riverhawks, who timed out in 1:59.40.
Sandy (2:09.64), Grant (2:33.28) and Cleveland (2:45.17) were the final three programs to score a place in the rankings.
“The boys also had their share of carnage as well,” Cordell said. “Our team did very well with some personal bests.”
The last league race of the regular season is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at a venue to be determined.
