Not only did Mount Hood League skiers have to contend with each other in a slalom race, but the athletes dealt with rainy weather and a softer surface in a race at Ski Bowl on Challenger.
Most of the field had trouble in the icy conditions, with a lot of disqualifications, but the Riverhawks had Martin Carter, Preston Klindt and Emma Diede each secure top-20 finishes.
Carter put forth the best time of the boys’ team with a two-run time of one minute and 26.95 seconds for seventh place out of 37 racers, 19 seconds from the top spot held by Hood River Valley’s Montana Kurahara (1:07.89).
Klindt took another step forward from last week and churned out a 1:30.39 to place 10th overall in the field, finishing up with the seventh-best second run at 44.20.
James Pashek placed 23rd in 1:57.03, and Ethan Martin added a 2:02.17, and Chris Montecalvo had a second run of 55.17.
“Martin Carter had two clean runs and posted a career-best finish of seventh place,” said TD head coach Jeff Cordell. “Preston made one mistake on his first run, costing him several seconds, but still came out in 10th place. Our No. 3 boy was a no show, and Chris crashed on his first run, so we had to rely on our freshman to post a team time, and Ethan Martin stepped up and helped out the team.”
Those top times put TD in fourth place out of the five-team field at 4:51.82.
Hood River Valley (3:49.73), Cleveland (4:21.28), and Sandy (4:33.30) rounded out the top four three teams, and Grant (5:44.35) wound up in fifth place.
Louis Red Cloud, an individual skier out of Dufur, had a final mark of 1:43.46 to capture 15th place.
Out of the girls’ field of 39, Diede led the Riverhawks with two clean attempts of 1:06.13 and 1:04.59 to set her two-run mark of 2:10.72 for 19th place, just 30 seconds from 11th place.
Petra van Kessel added a 2:17.74 for 21st in the standings, and senior Timarra Roth had a time of 2:39.96 to grab 23rd place.
Madison High School’s Caroline Mueller won first place with a time of 1:19.43, and Hood River Valley’s Jesse Nunn was good for second place at 1:24.83.
Coming off two promising races to start the season, the Hawks next race at Ski Bowl on Reynolds, a Giant Slalom event.
“The team is looking forward to skiing bigger turns and higher speeds,” Cordell said.
Times and finishes were reported late due to an overturn of a disputed disqualification.
