Devin Wilson, Colton Walker and Antonio Argueta are each hoping that Friday’s 43-0 trouncing of Mac-Hi is the type of decisive output that will give the Riverhawks some momentum surge.
“We definitely came together tonight and won this game as a team,” said Argueta. “This gives us a huge push towards our next game, which will most definitely be a challenging team, but we have the talent and we can come together for another win. We just need to turn the page buckle down and focus.”
The Dalles scored on five of its first six possessions, using four touchdowns and a field goal to grab an early lead.
At the 10 minute and 31 second mark of the opening quarter, Wilson capped a four-play, 50-yard drive with a two-yard run.
With 32 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Wilson added his second score of the matchup, this one coming from four yards out to increase the TD lead to 14-0 entering the second quarter.
Glenn Breckterfield hauled in a 30-yard pass from Dominique Seufalemua to give the Hawks a 21-0 lead in the first minute of the second quarter.
Hernandez then booted a 37-yard field goal, and 1:50 later, the Riverhawks tacked on a touchdown, as Wilson hit paydirt for the third time on a four-yard run to move his squad ahead 31-0 with 7:02 left in the half.
With less than two minutes in the second period, Seufalemua connected with wide receiver Bryce Belanger from five yards out for a touchdown and the Hawks were way out in front by a 37-0 margin at the break.
TD’s final scoring drive came with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter, as Damion Morris rumbled for six yards to cap a 7-play, 56-yard drive to swell the lead to 43-0.
TD had just one drive end in a punt, and it converted six of eight inside the red zone.
Overall, the Hawks ran 45 plays and amassed 306 yards, 142 coming on the ground.
Wilson had a dual threat effort with 10 rushes for 64 yards, and three catches for 80 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Morris had 42 yards rushing, Izaac Tapia rushed for 27 yards and Walker had 20 yards on the ground on three carries.
Belanger finished with 20 yards receiving and Breckterfield had one catch for 30 yards and a score.
Seufalemua went 8 for 14 passing with two touchdown and 164 yards.
The junior signall caller had one interception and was not sacked by Mac-Hi’s defense in the game.
Friday’s dominant win erased a stretch of 12 straight Riverhawk losses.
Until this weekend, the last TD win came on Oct. 25, 2013, a 28-20 overtime win over cross-town rival, Hood River Valley.
“To go on the road and get our first win is huge,” Walker said. “The feeling to finally get a win is crazy. So with this win, we can carry our confidence over to our next game and try to push a little harder to get another ‘W.’”
Walker, a senior, added that the approach on offense was to not turn the ball over and play assignment football.
They were able to dial in everything at the right moments to earn a huge shutout victory.
Defensively, the Riverhawks forced five Mac-Hi punts, four turnovers, three on interceptions by Breckterfield, and allowed a scant 103 total yards, 26 coming on the ground on 36 Pioneer attempts.
On defense, Chance Brace had eight tackles, Argueta added seven and Tapia posted six tackles.
Henry Lee tallied 5.5 tackles and a pass breakup, Cash Mathewson had 4.5 tackles and Walker chipped in 3.5 tackles.
Julian Hernandez notched three tackles, had an interception and sacked the quarterback once.
“If we were to do what we did in practice, we would come out on top, which we executed well,” Walker said of Friday’s effort. “We also set some goals and to not get so many penalties like the first couple of games, which really killed us. Also, we executed that really well on Friday and that just helped us even more.”
TD head varsity football coach Steve Sugg called it a team win where everyone played a solid 48 minutes.
With this added energy coming off a road win, the goal is to maintain this edge entering play this Friday in La Salle.
“This is going to give us a reason to work hard every day in practice and come to the games with a chip on are shoulder,” Wilson continued. “I think that we are all in this now and know that we have a good chance at being successful. We also now know the feeling and that is a feeling that nobody wants to let go so whatever we have to do we are going to do it.”
