Ray RodriguezIt was a festive Monday for The Dalles Cross Country team at its year-end awards banquet held in the commons at TDMS.
Letter and participation certificates were handed out, as well as three special awards to both male and female participants.
Avery Cardosi and Jony Nelson were given certificates for earning Columbia River Conference first-team, all-league honors, and the trio of Caela Dunagan (20:38.18 personal record), Molly Nelson (20:53.38 personal record) and Paige McLeod (20:53.45 personal record) picked up second-team recognition.
The four females were part of the two-time district champion group.
“Unlike most sports, cross country awards are based on how kids finish at the district meet and state meet,” said TD head coach Bob Thouvenel.
Cardosi finished 19th at the state meet held on Oct. 31 at Lane Community College in Eugene, in 20:21.
In addition to the league and state awards, individual athletes were given plaques for team honors.
Cardosi (20:19.31 personal record) was named the Riverhawks’ Outstanding Girl and Jony Nelson (16:27.26 personal record) earned the Outsanding Male award.
The senior duo of Katie Burns (24:52 season best) and Emily Morin (19:45.49 season best) were named as Most Inspirational Girls, and fellow senior Joe Linebarger (22:02.8 season best) was picked as theHawks’ Most Inspirational Male athlete.
With so much talent on both rosters, there was a healthy competition amongst the team with each runner bringing out the best in each other.
Darlene House (25:09 personal record) and Paige McLeod (20:53.38 personal record), both sophomores, tallied votes as Most Improved Females.
The young underclassmen tandem of Zerin Croover (17:31.61 personal record) and Michael Lantz (18:17.6 personal record) were the Most Improved Males.
Last Saturday at the USATF Oregon Junior Olympics State Meet at the Hidden Creek Polo Grounds in West Linn, Lantz, a sophomore, had a final time of 18:49.51.
Up next is the Nike Border Clash scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 22 on the Nike World Campus in Beaverton.
