Through the hours of practice and preparation, members of The Dalles Cheerleading team is ready to test their skills against some competitive groups for the Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association All-State competition at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Thurston High School.
This is an individual and stunt scholarship event, with six cheer performers with seniors Taylor Sugg, Lillia Chance, Alyssa Donnell, along with junior Abbey Helseth and sophomores Jessika Nanez and Kendyl Kumm.
“They learn a choreographed dance/cheer and perform it in front of a panel of judges. They are judged based on jump technique, dancing, tumbling, voice and overall execution of sharpness of motions, etc.,” said TD cheer coach Kelsey Sugg.
For 6A and 5A preliminary rounds, athletes will be placed in random order, not by school, and they will compete in groups of three.
In the finals, they will perform the exact routine as the prelims, but they will perform individually.
Athletes will be timed and will have 30 seconds to complete their running tumbling pass, three jumps and standing tumbling pass.
The event only awards three places, and top honors earns $1,000 and both second and third place outcomes land a $500 prize.
“This is a hard competition, as girls will be competing against the best girls from teams from every high school in Oregon,” coach Sugg added.
In the preparation process, choreographer Tara Mahoney helped the team with their state routines and coach Sugg expressed her excitement to prepare for those competitions, which take place beginning in December and go through February, where state starts on Feb. 13 in Portland.
“For many years, I have respected and admired the cheer program at The Dalles, and specifically, the creativity and legacy that was inspired and fostered by Leslie and Kristi Maley,” Mahoney said. “I am so honored and proud to be a part of the resurrection. (I have) nothing but love for TD always.”
