The Dalles The golf scores were a little higher than expected, but The Dalles Wahtonka golf coach Kent Smith saw some improvements made on Thursday at the Prineville Boy’s Golf Invitational on Meadow Lakes Golf Course.
From last week’s effort on the Tetherow Golf Course in Bend, TDW had several golfers cut down strokes from their totals.
“We struggled a little bit today, but I was happy to see that they at least improved for their last tournament,” said TDW head coach Kent Smith. “We still a lot of work to do and we have it in mind that we will keep working hard on the practice course.”
The tandem of Bailey Ortega and Nick Glesener each shot 96 from the course and Coby Conlee ended up right behind after a 47 on the back nine with his 97.
Ortega appeared to be headed in the right direction through the opening nine holes with a 44, but the freshman could not find his groove on the back nine and piled on a 52 to this scorecard for his score.
Glesener and Conlee each started with a 50 on the front nine and shaved down a handful of shots in the second half of the tournament for their marks.
Dakota Green kicked in a 97 after posting a team-best 47 on the more difficult back end.
Dylan Fitzgerald (103) played his best match of the season, as a playmaker and he cut down 34 strokes off his Tetherow outcome.
“My goal for them is to show improvement from one tournament to the next,” Smith continued. “There were a few good moments, but we did not get the scores at the level I wanted.”
Redmond’s Mason Rodby chalked up medalist honors with a 74, beating Pendleton’s Walker Hoolehan (77) and Redmond’s Tom Messmer (77) by three strokes.
Hermiston’s J.D. Thacker added an 80 for fourth place, while Mountain View’s Matt Krieger and Redmond’s Riley Cron ended up in a deadlock for fifth place at 81.
With the stout shooting display put out by Rodby, Messmer and Cron, the Panthers dominated their next opponents, Pendleton (335) by 20 strokes.
Ridgeview (345), Hermiston (350), Crook County (352), Mountain View (370) and The Dalles Wahtonka (388) rounded out the overall team standings.
There is not much rest for the Eagle Indians, however, as they hit the links once again at noon on Monday for the Seaside Invitational.
It will be the last varsity tournament before 5A district action starts on May 6-7 in Hermiston.
