Needing a win to stay in the Big Sky Conference mix, the South Wasco County Redsides pulled off a thrilling 47-43 victory over Mitchell-Spray in a league battle played Saturday in Maupin.
“We pulled out a win. It was great at the end,” said South Wasco County head coach Bill Mead. “Our defense was there. Our offence need to finish their shots. We got great looks at the basket we just need to put it in.”
Both teams fought to a 24-all draw in the first half, but SWC created some distance in the third quarter with a 13-6 run to go ahead, 37-30 entering the fourth quarter.
Allie Noland scored six of her 18 points in the third quarter, Abby Birman followed up with four and Cassie Davis hit a field goal to help put the Redsides in control.
Mitchell-Spray did not go away easily, however, and came through with 13 points from four different players, five from Kyria Myers, but SWC had just enough offense and hit enough free throws to stay in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league.
Noland had 18 points, Birman was good for 11, and Davis had six points for the Redsides, who hit 20 field goals and 6 of 22 from the free throw line.
Mirna Paltoso led Mitchell with 14 points and both Otka Bartova and Myers had 12 points. Mitchell hit 11 field goals and shot 18 of 31 from the line.
The South Wasco County Redsides will forfeit its Friday win over Ione due to using a JV player for six quarters.
SWC is now in a second-place tie with Dufur after the loss, but coach Jim Hull said it means that his team has to work even harder to secure a first-round district bye in late February.
“To them, it was one loss and not a big deal,” Hull said. “I told them that those are coaches’ decisions and that one was on me. I just need to do a better job of managing minutes.”
