Coming off a 3-1 loss Tuesday at Mac-Hi, the Lady Riverhawks are now 0-4 to start the year with only one goal to their record.
“We have to do a better job of moving the ball around and putting shots on goal,” TD coach Oscar Nunez said. “You can’t score if you don’t do that. We have had scoring opportunities, we just need to finish on those when we get them.”
In Tuesday’s loss to Mac-Hi, The Dalles tried to stage a second-half rally, but could not get the shots to get past Mac-Hi goalkeeper Daisy Alvarez in a 3-1 loss.
Alvarez finished with 14 saves, as TD’s Petra Van Kessel-Ervin tallied the Riverhawks lone goal on an assist by Jordyn Hattenhauer in the 46th minute of the second half, which tied the score at 1-apiece at the time.
Two minutes later, the Pioneers responded with a goal by Rosie Velasco to go ahead 2-1 and they never looked back.
TD attacked the net late in the game and had nothing to show for their efforts, and Mac-Hi’s Marion Monsen had her free kick from 50 yards out go off the fingertips of TD goalkeeper Teddie Pitt to run the lead to 3-1.
TD (0-4 overall) hosts Crook County (2-3) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the start of league action.
For the second straight game, The Dalles head coach Matthew Dallman said his boys’ soccer team felt like they walked away with a win.
Tuesday, the Riverhawks controlled the first-half tempo and trailed 1-0 at the break and the Pioneers added a pair of second-half goals to hang on for the 3-1 victory in varsity play in Milton-Freewater.
Mac-Hi managed three shots in the second half and scored twice, one on an own goal.
“Our defense (Miguel Aguilar, Jake Roetcisoender and Andy Lopez) was solid today,” Dallman said. “It’s never good to give up so many goals, but again, we are limiting opponents’ chances, which is good. Now, it’s just fixing these little mistakes that are costing us games.”
Playing without Reed Twidwell, out sick, Tristan Bass stepped in and proved to be a handful for Mac-Hi defenders, and Alex Gutierrez was solid in the center attack.
TD’s goal came from Andy Lopez, as he dribbled through five Pioneer players straight down the middle of the field and hit a hard shot into the right corner.
As league play is coming up, TD is getting healthier and players are filling their roles, so Dallman has a good feeling the goals are going to come.
“Again, it’s really weird coming away from a 3-1 loss feeling positive and almost feeling as though we won...the better team doesn’t always win, and we proved that today,” Dallman said. “We have a nice long break coming up, which is nice because our small squad is dealing with some injuries. Having Alberto (Gallegos) and Reed (Twidwell) back on the field with the quality the midfield is playing with right now is exciting. The goals are coming.”
The Dalles (0-3-1 overall) travels to Crook County (0-2) for a league game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
