Coming off a lopsided 66-34 romp over Triad in their opening-round state playoff game, the No. 6-ranked Sherman Huskies are turning their full attention to a North Douglas team that is riding a 10-game winning streak.
“North Douglas is a very tough football team and we will need to be at our best if we are to compete,” said Sherman coach Bill Blevins.
In last week’s game, Kyle Fields and Isaiah Coles connected on consecutive drives with scores of 69 and 26 to give Sherman a 16-0 lead.
With 51 seconds left in the first quarter, Jacob Justesen added a seven-yard run for a 22-0 lead.
The Huskies led 38-18 at the half, but Triad inched to within 44-34 in the third period.
A nine-yard rushing touchdown by Coles and then a 62-yard run by Justesen, followed by an eight-yard run by Coles capped a 22-0 spurt to seal the victory.
Justesen had 12 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, Coles rushed 16 times for 71 yards with two scores, and he added two catches for 86 yards and a pair of end zone trips.
Maverick Winslow totaled 86 yards and a score, Fields went for 51 yards rushing and a touchdown, and he was 9 of 13 for 231 yards and three touchdowns.
Treve Martin hauled in three passes for 99 yards, Justesen totaled 25 yards and Max Martin went for 22 yards.
Triad was held to 75 yards rushing and 115 yards in the second half.
Sherman forced four turnovers, three interceptions by Justesen and a fumble recovery by Max Martin.
Treve Martin led with 12 tackles, Reese Blake made 7.5 tackles, Winslow added seven tackles, Justesen totaled five tackles, and the duo of Makoa Whitaker and Kyle Hensley combined for 5.5 tackles.
