Janet Guzman and Makenzie Blaylock scored 12 of the Sherman Huskies’ 20 points in the fourth quarter as part of a 20-13 run in a 45-35 girls’ basketball victory over Horizon Christian Saturday afternoon at Sherman High School.
“I have to give credit to my seniors. They stepped up to the challenge and helped this team win the game,” said Sherman head coach Steve Kaseberg. “It is great to have the veteran leadership come out when the game is on the line.”
Sherman (8-9 overall, 6-3 league) fired away at Horizon Christian, as Blaylock’s three field goals paced a 9-3 lead after one quarter.
Up by those six points, the Huskies were able to add to that cushion with an 11-10 output in the second period to go ahead 20-13 at the break.
Horizon chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter with Paulina Finn hitting three baskets in a 9-5 run to make it a 25-22 Sherman lead heading into the final frame.
The Huskies had Guzman and Blaylock combine for 12 points in the fourth quarter, Brittney Orendorff added two field goals and Emily Hill sank 4 of 6 free throw attempts to move the Huskies ahead down the stretch.
Blaylock led all scorers with 16 points, Guzman dropped 11 and Hill had seven points for the Huskies, who made 15 field goals and went 14 of 28 from the free throw line.
Horizon Christian (5-13, 2-6) notched 11 field goals and went 12 of 28 from the line, as Finn led the way with 13 points.
Jadee Hicks added nine points and the tandem of Hannah Kempf and Trista Hicks tallied four points each.
Sherman is riding a two-game winning streak and is currently the No. 3 seed in the Big Sky Conference, one game ahead of Arlington.
“We’re still in a good position heading to the postseason,” Kaseberg said. “We are still improving and I like what I have seen from these kids in the last couple of games.”
The Lady Huskies next travel to Maupin for a 6 p.m. Friday game against the Redsides (3-15, 1-8).
