With every element from snow, rain, wind and fog taking center stage Saturday on Shooting Star Ridge, The Dalles skiers took a huge step forward.
Representing the girls’ team, Timarra Roth and Robin Pashek had top-11 times and Emma Diede stayed on course in a slalom race held at Mount Hood Meadows.
Roth had one of her best events of the year with markers of 49.11 seconds and 51.52 seconds for a combined total of one minute and 40.63 seconds, just 15.29 seconds off the pace set by Hood River Valley’s Lucy McLean, who beat all 66 female participants with her 1:25.34 time.
Following Roth was Pashek, who notched times of 53.46 and 56.99 for a 1:50.45 and 11th place in the order of finish.
Diede showed her worth on the slopes with a top-50 output in slalom where she crossed the finish line in a solid 2:24.06.
“The girls did well with Timarra leading the group with a solid seventh place,” said The Dalles head coach Jeff Cordell. “Robin got 11th and Emma Diede, a first-year skier, beat 16 girls in her third race ever.”
The Dalles wound up fifth in the six-team division with a cumulative time of 5:55.14.
Hood River Valley (4:36.60), St. Mary’s Academy (5:33.58), Sandy (5:41.82) and Grant (5:51.58) capped the top-4 teams, and after The Dalles, Cleveland picked up sixth place at 5:58.73.
Preston Klindt, Griffin Martin and Martin Carter put on an impressive display, all finishing within the top-19, but senior Eli Holeman ran into some trouble on his attempt.
After a disqualification on the first try, Holeman clocked in at 39.09, the best of the 46 other skiers, by .28 seconds.
“Eli Holeman, coming off a win in his last race, unfortunately hooked a tip in the middle of the course and was disqualified,” Cordell explained. “He was leading the pack by over two seconds and would have had another win without the DQ. We were all hoping for a win for Eli, hopefully he didn’t feel too much pressure. That kind of thing happens in slalom (DQ). It’s just part of ski racing.”
His only timed run helped keep the Riverhawk boys in a third place spot with a total reading of 4:49.88.
Hood River Valley, led by William Lamer (1:19.91), secured top prize with a 4:10.58.
Grant was second at 4:45.58, Sandy placed fourth in 4:59.07 and Cleveland ended up fifth on the leaderboard with a 5:12.60.
Klindt had an opening attempt of 48.05 and then he went for 46.12 to gather his 1:34.17 and 10th place.
Martin jumped out to a 1:41.60, Carter tallied a two-run marker of 1:47.25.
Ethan Semlor edged in a 1:06.62 and a 1:05.28 for a 2:11.90 and Christopher Montecalvo picked up the pace in his second try for a 1:05.42 and a two-run increment of 2:12.32.
“The boy’s team managed a third place finish, with good results from Preston, Griffin and Martin all skiing well and consistently,” Cordell said.
TD next hits the slopes for giant slalom action at 10 a.m. Saturday.
