More than mid-way through its spring season, Riverside Gymnastics Academy’s overall team is making big strides on its way to state and regional championships in weeks to come.

The competitive team, including boys and girls, were in action at the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) Open in Portland, February 14-16.

It proved a worthwhile endeavor.

Riversides’ level 3 girls team took home a first-place team trophy; level 7 girls took fourth place; level 4 girls took fifth place, and the level 5 boys’ team took first place on vault.

No small fete.

The international meet draws the best teams from all over the pacific, including Alaska, Washington, even Japan.

Riverside’s most advanced athlete, Audrey Hinatsu, competing at level 9, scored out in the top 10 in two of her four events and knocked out an all-around score of 35.125 for a sixth- place finish.

She took fourth in bars, sixth in beam.

United States Gymnastics Association levels go to 10 and then athletes move to elite levels, which can include a bid at getting on the Olympic team.

“It’s going fast,” said Hinatsu. “We’re doing good.” The 15-year-old is attempting to master a release move on bars where she moves from the high to low bar.

Riverside also boasts four athletes competing at level 8 – Bailey Coyner, Hannah Hinshaw, Taylor Sugg and Cedar Wiley.

At the MAC open, Sugg went sixth all-around with a score of 35.85, which included a sixth-place finish on vault and a fifth-place finish on bars.

“It’s been tough this season,” said Taylor Sugg, noting the competition is fierce.

Sugg, 16 and Hinatsu pointed out that the difference between a first-place and sixth-place finish can be determined by hundredths of a point.

The level-7 girl’s team pulled together for a fourth-place trophy.

McKenna Bailey, Hannah Caracciolo, Elena Cardosi, Kendyl Kumm and Emma Smith contributed in the effort.

Cardosi led the way with an overall score of 36.25 while Kumm kicked in a fourth-place on vault with a 9.375.

In addition, Smith was strong on vault, sticking a 9.3.

“Our level 7 routines are getting better,” said Coach Mike Smith. “There are a lot fewer falls. They are staying on the equipment.”

At level 5, Samantha Stanley took sixth on vault with a 9.15 and Alexa Baldey scored out an 8.875 for an individual fifth place.

The level-5 boy’s team brought their A-game on vault with a first-place team finish in the event.

Harry Proctor, Jaxon Pullen and Steven Stanley all contributed to the overall score.

Proctor stuck a 10.1 in the event, followed by Pullen with a 10.0 and then Stanley who was nipping at their heels with a 9.8.

The level-4 girl’s team took home the fifth place trophy.

Krissy Carter led the team with a second-place all around finish of 36.55, with a first place on floor and a third on vault.

Sofia Blair also brought a well balanced performance with an eighth-place all around score of 36.325. Meara Crawford and Halle Haskins were also in the mix with 35.8 and 35.7 all-around scores, respectively.

Riverside’s level-3 girl’s team continued its aggressive push, after taking second at state last fall.

The team took first place with big contributions from Marissa Baldy, Daisy Morales, Ahni Rubio, Annika Baumgarten and Hailey Birch.

Baldy went first all around with a stunning 37.275, including first place performances in bars, beam and floor. Morales was close behind with a 37.025 all-around score.

Baumgarten came close to perfect on vault with a 9.6, and Birch worked the chalk for a 9.375 on bars.

“They are doing really well,” said Coach Sarah Smith. “They are making a lot of progress and it is showing up in their scores, significantly.”
