SOUTH WASCO player Loreto Morelli (middle) goes up for a shot in 1A boy’s basketball play. Tuesday in Maupin, the Redsides suffered a 52-46 loss at the hands of Lyle-Wishram High School.
A cold start ended up hurting South Wasco County in the end.
Lyle-Wishram jumped out in front 20-10 after one quarter of play, and still had enough in the tank in the fourth quarter to secure a 52-46 win Tuesday in non-league boy’s hoops play in Maupin.
“There was a lid on the hoop in the first quarter,” said SWC head coach Jim Hull. “We had all of our normal shots we would normally shoot, but we just missed them. They were in, out, in, out, whatever, you name it. We could not get anything to go in.”
As the game wore on, it appeared as though the Redsides were about to stage a comeback.
SWC managed an 8-6 output in the second quarter to go down 26-18.
In the third quarter, they turned the tables for a 16-9 run to creep to within a 35-34 disadvantage to end the frame.
Lyle-Wishram was able to find its groove in the fourth quarter with some clutch shots and free throw as part of a 17-12 run to come away with the 52-46 triumph.
Loreto Morelli led the Redsides with 20 points, 18 coming in the third and fourth quarters.
Tony Holliday shot 4 for 5 from the floor and sank both his free throws for his 10 points, and Travis Hayes dropped seven points to make up the scoring leaders.
Still, SWC is just in the infancy of its season. They have had just nine days together, so with some slight tweaks and some returners back in the fold, they can make the necessary jumps in the New Year.
“Hopefully, this is something to build on,” Hull said. “It was good because all seven players scored. They showed that they are capable of doing good things. The effort is there. We have played two good teams so far in the ninth day and I like the direction we are going.”
SWC (0-2 overall) heads to Portland for a game against Portland Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Redsides host Perrydale at 5:30 p.m.
