SOUTH WASCO COUNTY point guard Peggy Espeland coasts down the floor for a layup attempt in 1A girl’s basketball play this season in Maupin. Friday versus Sherman, the Lady Redsides erased a 22-13 halftime deficit with a 39-22 run to pull off a 52-44 upset victory over the Sherman Huskies.
Ally Muhleman, Molly Foreaker and Roxanne O’Neal combined for 16 points in the fourth quarter, as the South Wasco County Redsides battled back from a 22-13 halftime deficit with a 39-22 second-half rally to defeat Sherman by a 52-44 score Friday in Big Sky Conference girls’ basketball play Friday in Maupin.
With the win, the Lady Redsides climb to within one game of sixth place and a district play-in spot with three games left on the schedule.
“We played great. Our shooting has improved,” said first-year Redside head coach Bill Mead. “We need to just win one quarter at a time like we did in our second half of the Sherman game.”
In addition to the scoring punch provided by Muhleman, Foreaker and O’Neal, the Redsides had Shelby Moody drop four points and both Allie Noland and Kiana Moody hit on two points apiece to lead a 23-11 run in the fourth quarter.
One big help came from the free throw line, where SWC sank 11 of 21 attempts in the fateful final frame.
Sherman (8-9 overall, 6-3 league) appeared to be in control for the first 16 minutes of the game with post players Makenzie Blaylock, Katie Asher and Janet Guzman coming together for 15 points to jumpstart runs of 9-6 and 13-7 to move the team ahead by nine points at the break.
In the second half, only Guzman and Blaylock hit more than one field goal, as the Huskies hit on 8 of 19 from the floor and went 4 for 10 from the free throw line.
All told, the Redsides (3-15, 1-8) made 19 field goals, two from 3-point territory and went 12 of 23 from the line.
Foreaker paced SWC with 14 points, Shelby Moody added 13, Muhleman scored 11 and O’Neal added six points.
Janet Guzman scored 15 points to lead the way for a Sherman team that hit 17 field goals, one three, and converted 9 of 22 from the free throw line.
Blaylock finished with 11 points, and Kiersten Casper, Emily Hill, Brittney Orendorff and Asher netted four points each.
Sherman hosted Mitchell-Spray Saturday, and will then head out to Condon to take on the No. 3 Lady Knights (19-1, 10-0) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
