Jake Kortge had three hits, drove in three runs and scored four times and the No. 2-ranked Dufur Rangers scored 10 runs in the first two innings to demolish Portland Christian 13-3 in a non-league baseball game played in Portland.
“We had the sticks going early on against Portland Christian,” said Dufur coach C.S. Little. “We made good contact on their pitcher and were able to string some hits together to give our pitchers a big lead to work with.”
Ahead 10-1 entering the third inning, Dufur added two runs in the third to go out in front, 12-1, but Portland Christian battled back for two runs in the fourth to make it a 12-3 game.
Dufur invoked the mercy rule in the sixth inning with a single run and Kortge recorded the final six outs from the mound to secure his team’s fifth consecutive win.
Bryson Caldwell earned his team-leading fourth win of the season, as he lasted three innings and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five.
In 77 innings, the Ranger pitching staff has allowed 43 runs, 19 earned, on 57 hits with 116 strikeouts and 39 walks for a 1.73 combined earned run average.
The pitchers have allowed two runs on two occasions and have two shutouts to their record.
Coach Little credits assistant coach Dean Dollarhide for helping pitchers Trever Tibbets, Caldwell, Hagen Pence, Kolbe Bales and company along.
“Having (Dean) Dollarhide on this staff has really given us an edge. He is a big part of why our pitchers have stepped it up this year,” Little said. “With our depth, we can rely on a bevy of arms to get the job done. They (the pitchers) have responded emphatically.”
This past Saturday, Dufur hit the diamond against No. 19 Pilot Rock for a doubleheader and scored a two-game sweep by margins of 7-4 and 7-6.
In the opener, Bryson Caldwell, Hagen Pence, Kolbe Bales and Connor Uhalde each stroked doubles and the Dufur Rangers broke open a 2-all tie with four runs in the fifth inning to secure a 7-4 win over the Rockets.
Caldwell drove in two runs and scored once, Uhalde had an RBI and scored twice and the Rangers totaled eight hits from seven different players.
Senior starter Trever Tibbets allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits and seven strikeouts for his third victory.
Looking to complete the sweep, Tibbets had four hits and Caldwell slugged his second home run of the season in Dufur’s 7-6 win.
Ahead by a 7-3 count entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Pence, who came on in relief of starter Bales, allowed three runs. The freshman was able to shut down Pilot Rock’s rally to preserve the one-run triumph.
Pence tossed four innings of six-hit ball with two strikeouts and two walks. Of the three runs he allowed, one was earned.
Caldwell and Nick Little had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs each, Bailey Keever had a double and drove in two runs, Uhalde scored twice and Jake Kortge went 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
