Giselle Manzo scored five goals and Emma Weir added two, as The Dalles girls’ soccer team jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 9-0 victory over Redmond Tuesday in varsity action at Redmond High School.
From last week’s jamboree at Century, first-year coach Oscar Nunez is liking the direction this team is headed.
“We played a great game,” Nunez said. “Everyone was working together and communicating. We are starting to pick up more on the new tactics and formations.”
Weir and Jordyn Hattenhauer were able to give the Riverhawks a decisive advantage on the wings with their attacking speed, so it opened up the middle of the field for the rest of the forwards and midfielders.
Manzo netted two goals in the opening half, and the trio of Weir Brooke McCall and Alexia Tapia followed with goals of their own to make it a 5-0 halftime lead.
“I was very happy with our ball control, passing and moving, and possession of the ball,” Nunez continued. “I was really excited to see Brooke McCall step up as a leader and take control of the midfield. That really made a difference in our offensive scheme.”
In the final 40 minutes, Manzo scored three times and Weir added another tally to cap the scoring surge.
Hattenhauer had an assist in each half, Manzo added an assist and Victoria Barragan, who played in 10 minutes coming back from injury, posted an assist as well.
“Victoria had short time because of her recent recovery of her injury, but managed to make a difference and get an assist in the few minutes she played,” Nunez said.
McCall, Jenna Miller and Tapia were able to control the middle of the field, which helped the defense and sophomore goalkeeper Addie Klindt shut Redmond down.
Klindt finished with four saves for her first varsity shutout.
“Defensively we were solid with Ivorie Taylor doing a good job getting our defense up the field and keeping them up,” Nunez said. “Alexia and Jenna worked hard to win the ball back in the middle on defense and Addie stayed strong in goal with a couple key saves. Yessenia Morales was a great vocal leader on the field on defense.”
Nunez said the Hawks played well in losses to Century and St. Helens last week in their jamboree, making adjustments on the fly.
It is still early, but with a strong start to the season, this group is trending upward, as the home games are set up over the next two weeks against Jefferson, Mac-Hi and Franklin.
TD (1-0) hosts Jefferson at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
“We still have room for improvement and will continue to improve, so I am very excited to see what this team will achieve this season,” Nunez said.
