LOCAL RUNNERS pace the pavement during the seventh annual Jumpstart Valentine’s Day 3k, 5k and 10k race held at Lewis and Clark Festival Park in The Dalles.
With much fanfare in its seven-year existence, the Jumpstart Valentine’s Day race provided all the glitz and glamour under 64-degree skies for 149 determined harriers ready to set new racing marks at the Lewis and Clark Festival Park in The Dalles.
The 3k race saw the most competitors lined up across the board, but the long, more grueling distances such as the 5k and 10k had close finishes.
On the men’s side, Calum Robertson staked claim to first place in the 5k class with a marker of 22 minutes and 10 seconds, just a few ticks ahead of his next two opponents.
Michael Tunseth managed to cross the tape in 22:22 and Juan Cruz was right behind for third place in a solid 22:29.
Bill Norris (22:32), Clark Bryant (23:07), Hunter Dawson (23:56), Scott Bryant (24:22) and Jax Cooper (24:59) capped the top half of the field.
Melody Sanchez could not be contained in her 5k women’s race and she came through with a time of 21:17 to cruise past the group of top runners.
Emily Alcott placed second in 22:34 and Sophie Whitehead scurried home in third place at 23:41.
The Dalles athlete Bailey Nearing had a time of 25:53, and she was followed up by Hannah Knott (26:18), Shana Mattson (26:53) Carmen Esquivias (28:32) and Nicole Chaffin (28:38) rounded out the field of placers.
With many in pursuit of standout runner Leanne Neal, she could not be denied another winning performance on the day, taking top honors in the 10k classification with a marker of 50:23.
Erin Kovalchuk came in second place at 50:34, Amanda Hoy grabbed third place in 54:09 and then Laura Sanchez (54:10), Kristi Springer (55:20), Kristina Madrigal (58:41) and Erin Dray (58:49) were able to secure top-7 status.
For the men, Sid Ganders tore up the 10k field with his top time of 43:09, besting the next harrier, Josias Ritz-Torrez (45:33) by more than a minute.
Scott Rector (47:14), Justin Brock (49:46), Nate Stice (51:00), Mike Shiach (52:08) and Al Madrigal (58:40) were the other performers who wound up in the top third of the standings.
Cordell won the men’s 3k race in 14:52, and he was chased by Blake Willis (17:22), Daniel Elias (19:21), Beau Dawson (21:38), Harold Clark (21:38), Colton Green (26:10) and Brandon Green (26:18).
Lyndey Sanchez motored home for top billing in the women’s 3k event with her marker of 15:42 setting the stage.
Jean Vollmar (20:09), Karis Hammack (20:31), Hannah Hammond (22:47), Liz Hammond (22:48), Chloe Wenz (23:38), Dani Lawson (25:54), Hailey Green (26:10) and Zoe Casady (27:36) rounded out the runners.
Some names may be misspelled due to handwriting styles.
When the athletes crossed the finish line, their ranking was cemented for another month, only to return at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 14.
In that span of time, with another 30 days to train, they confront their final test of the Jumpstart winter three race series, the St. Patty’s Day 3k, 5k and 10k Race.
Costs are $20 with a shirt, $8 without before pre-registration date on March 10.
On the day of the event, costs go to $25 and $10.
Flyers for the St. Patty’s race can be picked up at the entrance of Lewis and Clark Festival Park.
