Late in the fourth quarter, The Dalles girls’ basketball team erased a nine-point lead and inched to within five points, but misfired shots, ill-timed turnovers and missed free throws proved to be too much to overcome in a 42-31 loss against No. 15-ranked Milwaukie Tuesday at Kurtz Gym.
The Dalles came out in full force to start the season with three consecutive victories, but have now lost four games in a row.
It all comes down to the fundamentals.
“We should be 5-2 right now. We know that, and our team knows that,” TD head coach Brian Stevens said. “In this game here, the better team won. But, I am happy our girls played as hard as they did and we were this close. We played well. We all feel that we should be 5-2 right now, but they are not, they are 3-4. So, we know that we have some small things to work on, like improving from the free throw line and limiting turnovers.”
In the first quarter, Paulina Finn scored 10 points and Bailey LeBreton poured in four to give the Riverhawks a 14-10 cushion.
Milwaukie (3-3 overall) tied the score at 19-all after posting a 9-5 second-quarter spurt, as the defense held TD to two field goals, both by Finn.
The Lady Mustangs finished off play with runs of 14-6 and 9-6 for their 11-point win.
The Dalles managed four second-half field goals, one in the final period, and converted 4 of 8 fourth-quarter free throws.
“In the fourth quarter, we got totally flustered and pressed and forced everything, without them even applying pressure,” Stevens said. “They just showed us the defense and we would end up throwing the ball away, over and over.”
Milwaukie had 17 field goals, three 3-pointers, and shot five of 12 free throws, with India Gultry netting 20 points on seven field goals, three 3-pointers, and 3 of 6 on free throws.
Finn reeled off 17 points and 15 rebounds, LeBreton added 10 points and nine boards, and Jodi Thomasian ended up with two points and six rebounds to lead the Riverhawks, who notched 12 field goals, two 3-pointers and shot 5 of 9 from the line.
Stevens said that Milwaukie was the most polished team his group had faced this season, so to be in contention late, was a positive sign, especially with an inexperienced varsity roster surrounding seniors, Finn and Thomasian.
“Molly Taylor, Jenna Miller and Kilee Hoylman all got a really good run today. They got to go up against experienced, seasoned guards and they really held their own and they played well,” Stevens said. “I think for Bailey, all but one of the moves she made was all footwork, which shows she has been working. Bailey has come a long way already. Her rebounding and athleticism, plus her ability to control the paint on defense is just unmatched by anybody.”
The Dalles (3-4) makes a trip to Bend at 6 p.m. Friday in another non-league contest against the No. 7-ranked Lava Bears (5-3).
