The Ione girls’ basketball team went 18 of 25 on free throws and forced Sherman into more than 30 turnovers in a 44-39 comeback win Saturday in Ione.
Things kicked off to a promising start for the Lady Huskies with a 10-4 run through eight minutes of play.
Ione battled back in the second period with an 11-6 outburst to creep to within a 16-15 halftime deficit.
Up by one point to start the third quarter, the Huskies went on a 14-2 run in the first four minutes, but Ione scratched and clawed their way back using a 16-4 rally to make it a 34-33 Sherman lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Cardinals then turned the corner in the final eight minutes for an 11-5 run to cap the five-point win.
“In the fourth, we panicked on the offensive end and gave up way too many offensive rebounds on their end of the court,” said Sherman coach Steve Kaseberg.
Along with the turnover bug hitting hard, Kaseberg said his team missed 25 lay-ups.
“In this league, you can’t win with a lack of aggressiveness and turnovers and we are better than that, which means we still have a bunch of work to do,” Kaseberg said.
Now mired in a stretch of five losses in the past six games, the Huskies (2-5 overall, 0-1 league) will look to get back on track in a road game tonight against Horizon Christian (3-5).
