The streaking Columbia Gorge Hustlers pulled out a pair of wins over the Showtime 18U team by scores of 4-0 and 8-7 in American Legion Post 19 baseball play at Quinton Street Ballpark Sunday in The Dalles.
During this most recent six-game run, the Hustlers, managed by J.R. Runyon, have outscored their opponents by a 44-15 margin.
While the offense has swung out in mid-season form, in the opening game, TDW graduate Connor Mathisen tossed a six-inning, three-hit, eight-strikeout gem in the shutout win.
The Hustlers gave their southpaw all the support he would need with a four-run outburst in the top of the second inning.
Lucas Denney was plunked and Steven Bartells rapped out a single to put two runners on base.
One out later, another hit batter loaded the bases for Austin Wilson.
On a 2-1 pitch, Wilson roped a two-run double to bring in Denney and Bartells and up the count to 2-0.
Beaux Watt hit a sacrifice fly and Justin Sugg capped the frame with an RBI single to make it, 4-0.
Showtime could only get two runners in scoring position over the next four innings, and Mathisen retired the final six batters he faced, including three consecutive strikeouts in the sixth frame.
Denney closed out the game with a scoreless seventh to secure the win.
In all, the Hustlers totaled nine hits, as Mathisen went 3 for 4, and Bartells had two hits and a run scored.
Denney, Nick Weekly, Clay Copper and Wilson had a hit each, and Sugg reached twice on walks.
In the nightcap, both teams slugged it out in extra innings with Nolan McCall driving in Sugg with a walk-off RBI double to give his team an 8-7 eight-inning triumph.
After Wilson escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the top of the eighth, the Hustlers used the excitement of that act with some solid offense of their own in the home half.
Sugg and Mathisen started out with back-to-back singles to start the rally for McCall.
On a 1-2 pitch, McCall smashed the game-winning single to drive in Sugg to give the Hustlers an 8-7 win.
Offensively, the Hustlers garnered 13 hits from six different players.
Mathisen paced the Hustlers with a 4 for 4 effort with two runs scored, and Weekly went 3 for 4 with an RBI.
McCall had three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs, and Sugg posted a 1 for 5 split with two runs and an RBI.
Wilson tossed three innings of five-hit relief with three strikeouts and two walks to record the win.
The Hustlers host the 18U Athletes in Motion for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Quinton Street Ballpark.
At 3 p.m. Friday, the Hustlers travel to Redmond for a twinbill at 3 p.m.
