The Sherman Huskies head into district play-in action next week riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping two games by identical 5-3 scores over the No. 7-ranked Dufur Rangers Friday in a Blue Mountain Conference baseball showdown in Moro.
In the opening game, Max Martin and Maverick Winslow had two hits each and Austin Kaseberg tossed a complete-game to lead the Huskies to a 5-3 win.
Dufur scored two runs to inch to within a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh and the tying runs in scoring position, but Kaseberg settled in and struck out the final two batters.
The Husky pitcher allowed three runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts.
“I was proud of how Austin pitched that first game,” Justesen said. “It was about him keeping his composure. Our whole team kept it together when we started to bend, but we didn’t break.”
Trever Tibbets and Jake Kortge had two hits apiece, and Kolbe Bales went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI, but Dufur stranded 12 runners on base.
Tibbets was the losing pitcher and he tossed six innings of nine-hit ball.
He struck out six and walked one.
In the nightcap, the Huskies scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and held off a late Ranger rally, as Maverick Winslow robbed Dufur’s Bailey Keever with a game-saving catch in centerfield to give Sherman a 5-3 win and the sweep.
Maverick Winslow paced Sherman’s offense with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored, and Martin added two hits and an RBI.
Wyatt Stutzman was issued two walks and scored twice, and Kyle Fields went 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
Fields finished the final five innings and struck out seven.
He allowed two runs on four hits and walked two.
Bryson Caldwell and Brent Sumner had two hits each to lead Dufur, and Bales went 1 for 3, as the Rangers left 10 runners on.
Caldwell was the losing pitcher. He allowed nine hits, struck out two and walked two in his five innings of work.
