With Grant Union sharpshooter Mitch Moulton going off for 24 points in the first half, Sherman coach Bill Blevins made a switch defensively.
Enter Max Martin.
Martin held Moulton to eight points in the second half and the Huskies erased an 18-16 first-quarter deficit with a 47-29 run over the final three quarters for a 63-47 victory over the 2A Prospectors Friday in Athena.
“Max Martin did a fantastic job of slowing Moulton down in the second half,” Blevins said.
All-in-all, this was a dominant defensive effort by the Huskies given the fact that Grant Union was averaging 78 points a game entering play.
After being down by two points entering the second quarter, the Huskies responded with a 28-13 run to go ahead 44-31 at the break.
The lead swelled to 53-35 and the Huskies held that advantage for the fourth quarter, with the lead dipping as low as 13 at one point.
Moulton ended with 32 points, as Grant Union (2-1) hit 15 field goals, eight from long range, to go with an 8 for 12 rate from the free throw line.
All told, Sherman sank 22 field goals, six from 3-point territory, and hit a solid 11 of 15 on free throw attempts.
Kyle Fields led the Huskies with 22 points and six rebounds and Isaiah Coles was good for 14 points and four boards.
Martin finished with 11 on the scoresheet, and freshman point guard Jacob Justesen had 14 points, five steals and five rebounds.
With senior Austin Kaseberg out of the lineup for a few more games, Blevins said his team still has some fine tuning to do in the preseason.
“I’m very pleased with our unselfishness. We are doing a great job of giving the ball to one another in a position to score,” Blevins said. “But we need to get better at game management. There is still a lot of room for improvement for this young team.”
No. 10-ranked Sherman (2-0 overall) hosts Lyle-Wishram, Wash. at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Moro.
