The Dalles seniors Grace Helyer and Ruthie Ford combined for five hits and two RBIs, as No. 9 The Dalles broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning enroute to a 6-3 win Friday over Hood River Valley on senior night in The Dalles.
TD’s win, coupled by Hermiston’s 12-2 loss Friday to Pendleton, gave the Riverhawks second place in league and a home state play-in matchup at home next Friday against St. Helens.
With the score knotted at 1-apiece in the fifth, Kailin Hoylman reached safely and then Kathryn Bradford reached on a walk.
Ford had an RBI hit, and one out later, Maddy Bradford and Sierra Watson drove in runs.
Ahead 5-3 in the sixth frame, Helyer drove in Hoylman with an RBI single to cap the scoring.
Hood River Valley scored one run in the third inning, but Maddy Bradford settled in nicely in the fourth and fifth innings, retiring six in a row.
Hood River scored two runs in the sixth on hits by Lauren Decker and Haylee Baker to make it 5-3, and after Baker’s hit, Made Vallejo singled to put the tying runs on base for No. 3 hitter Zoe Munn.
On the first pitch she saw, Munn hit a grounder to Watson at short for the final out.
Hood River (10-15 overall, 3-9 league) tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning.
The Eagles used a hit batter and a walk, but had a runner thrown out at third base, another out on a force at third and then Maddy Bradford struck out Makena Zeller swinging to end the threat.
Maddy Bradford tossed a complete-game nine-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Kathryn Bradford went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Maddy Bradford and Watson each had a hit and an RBI, Emma Weir notched a hit and Hoylman scored twice to lead The Dalles (17-9, 6-6).
