The Dalles girls’ soccer team accomplished a lot under the tutelage of first-year head coach Oscar Nunez and seven athletes were rewarded for their hard work through the 2016 season with all-Columbia River Conference honors.
Brooke McCall, Giselle Manzo and Victoria Barragan were on the first team, and Ivorie Taylor, Alexia Tapia, Emma Weir and Addie Klindt were second team recipients.
As a sophomore in 2014, McCall was a second teamer, and last year, opposing coaches picked her name as a second team selection for her play at midfield.
For Taylor, she was a first team selection as a junior, and in her final season as a Riverhawk, she added another all-league award to her credit.
In all, The Dalles won five games, two in league, and finished third in the conference to earn a state play-in qualification.
The Riverhawks nearly doubled their scoring output, rising from 20 goals scored last season to 35 this year, including 16 in their first two games of the season, both wins.
TD lost 10 matches overall, three coming by three goals or less.
“I feel like the biggest accomplishment is that my girls are excited about playing soccer again,” Nunez said. “They are talking about what they are going to do in the offseason to get better and they are talking about next year already. It’s good to see that they enjoyed soccer and have found their love for the game.”
With a solid core of players making their returns next season, and with a year of seasoning under the coaching of Nunez, the coach is hoping that the athletes can take another step closer to a higher finish in league and a deeper postseason run.
“We made some big changes in our formations and our positions, so they worked real hard to pick that up,” Nunez said. “We have been wanting more from our girls in terms of coming in with a good attitude, playing two-touch soccer and possessing the ball. We saw a lot of that this year. This was all due to their hard work.”
