The 2016 Gorge Roubaix Bike Race and Ride rolls into The Dalles this weekend with two days of racing Saturday and Sunday as well as a Sunday fun ride.
In its fourth year, the event has grown to nearly 400 participants coming from as far away as Colorado and Canada, as well as all over the Pacific Northwest.
The format is incredibly unique in that most participants will be riding standard skinny tired road bikes even though the course takes them on a number of gravel roads throughout the region.
“Gravel road riding has exploded in the last couple of years” says race director Chad Sperry. “Many cyclists are finding out that the new equipment can withstand the rigors of riding on gravel and it allows them far more opportunities of where they can go. In Wasco County, where we have more gravel roads than paved, it opens up a lot of options.”
The event will kick off at 9 a.m. this Saturday with a race out to Mosier along the Old Historic Highway, then up Dry Creek Road before descending down State Road to Marsh Cutoff and then back to The Dalles.
Residents should be prepared for some delays along this route.
On Sunday, the race will start right in front of Clock Tower Ales at 9 a.m. and head east through town and out to Petersburg.
Riders will head up 8-Mile Road and then onto Emerson Loop before heading out to Boyd and around on Center Ridge Road before coming back towards town on 15-Mile Road.
Columbia Via Heights is closed on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the event, as the finish line will now be located just east of the Celilo Substation.
The post-race party and awards will be held at Clock Tower starting at 2:30 p.m.
The public is welcome to come and watch the event and cheer on the riders. Riders of all abilities will be participating from beginners to seasoned pros.
