Yasmin Hill picked up third-place honors in the long jump and she scored a personal-record of 10-feet in the pole vault over the weekend at the OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires state track and field meet at Hayward Field in Eugene.
In all, the Riverhawks had several athletes earn spots on the podium, led by Hill and Avery Cardosi in the long jump on the first day Friday. Hill, a senior, had a leap of 16-10.75 for third place, and Cardosi went for 15-8 to secure seventh place.
“These kids competed well,” said TD coach Garth Miller. “They peaked at the right time. We had several kids on the podium. I am just proud of their effort.”
In the discus event, Riley Bardes, another senior, picked up seventh place with a throw of 135-10, and he added a 42-2 in the shotput.
“Riley is a senior who has worked hard for four years,” Miller said. “To have him go to the state meet and place is an honor. I am just really pleased for him. I am happy with his effort.”
Sant Strassheim, the 2015 district 300-meter hurdle champion, had a time of 42.00 in the 300, and he went for 16.72 in the 110-meter hurdles but did not make finals in either event.
Katie Conklin, a senior, who will head to Northwest Nazarene University to run track next season, ran a 16.71 in the 100-meter hurdles, but she fared better in the high jump and triple jump events.
Conklin, a wild card in the high jump, had a height of 5-0 for sixth place, and she added a fifth-place distance of 34-5 in the triple jump to make it to the podium.
With the career efforts put out by Conklin, Hill, Bardes and Strassheim, Miller is feeling good about what his veterans produced through the season.
“We will miss them as contributors,” Miller said. “They are good kids and fun kids to work with. They were great contributors to the team and we wish them the best next year.”
In the pole vault, Hill set a personal record with a height of 10-feet to tally sixth place, and the 4x100-meter relay team of Hill, Ivorie Taylor, Peyton Wojtecki and Taylor Sugg set a personal record in their run with a time of 52.51 for 11th place in the preliminary rounds.
“It was nice to have those younger girls compete in that venue,” Miller said. “They are getting a taste of running with the big dogs. It is good for them to gain experience at a high level, so they can be a better relay team.”
Through the regular season schedule, the Riverhawks set personal records, had first-place outputs and district championships, something Miller takes pride in.
Overall, he said the goal is to push the kids to reach the highest level they can.
After having eight athletes earn a state berth, Miller is looking forward to several athletes stepping up to the challenge in the 2016 season.
By virtue of how they placed at the District Meet, Hill was first-team all-league winner in the long jump, pole vault and 400-meter relay. She added a second-team bid in the 4x400-meter hurdle run.
Cardosi was a first-team recipient in the long jump and was a second team winner for her 800-meter run and 4x400-meter relay.
Strassheim was a first-team winner in both of his hurdle events, and he was a second team winner in the 4x400-meter relay.
Conklin was a first team winner in the short hurdle and triple jumps, and she added a second-team berth in the high jump.
Bardes earned second-team honors in the shotput and discus and the trio of Sugg, Wojtecki and Taylor claimed first-team honors for their relay performances.
Katie Burns, Aileen Luna-Lopez, Glenn Breckterfield and Antonio Morales were second team recipients in the 4x400-meter relay runs, Paul Clark was a second teamer in the long relay and triple jump, and Kayla Seibel picked up second-team award in the triple jump.
“We always expect the younger kids to step up next year,” Miller said. “To fill in the shoes of the seniors that have moved on. We have a good group coming back.”
On May 13 and 15 at Sid White Field in The Dalles, Miller helped organize the Columbia River Conference District Meet for two days, calling it a successful undertaking.
“As hosts of the district meet this year, I just want to thank all of the community members, the parents and former athletes that came to help make the meet successful,” Miller said.
“In track and field, we need that type of help and support to make a meet run smoothly for the kids. The coaches definitely appreciated the help that we got,” he said.
