The Dufur Rangers led 27-26 at the half, but Columbia Christian exploded for 15 second-half field goals and used a 38-25 second-half to hold on to the 64-52 win Tuesday in a non-league boys’ basketball game played at Dufur High School.
“It’s a bummer we lost, but Columbia is a good team with lots of size and some very athletic guards,” said Dufur head coach Tony White. “I thought the kids played pretty well tonight.”
Bailey Keever and Kolbe Bales spearheaded the Ranger charge in the opening quarter with 13 of the team’s 15 points to go out in front, 15-12.
Travis Lucas then scored four points and both Bales and Keever tacked on three points apiece to help the Rangers go ahead 27-26 at the half.
In the second half though, Columbia came out and concentrated on its post athletes to regain control of the game.
Taking center stage were the 6-foot-7 inch Zach Barbarick, 6-5 Levi Dalzell and 6-4 Hunter Endresen.
They combined for 21 points and a 21-7 run to take a 47-34 lead entering the final period.
In the fourth period, Dufur scored 18 points, two points each by Lucas and Curtis Crawford, three from Ethan Wetherbee, five from Bales and six points out of Keever.
“The kids settled down and we played with them in the fourth quarter,” White said. “We lost by 12, but overall, that’s the best we have executed in half court this year. Our posts keep improving and our bench is putting in some good minutes.”
Columbia Christian hit on 27 field goals and shot 9 of 21 from the line.
Dalzell had 22 points, Endresen had 14, Barbarick poured in 10 and former Dufur player, Levi Morris, totaled five points.
Keever tallied a team-high 19 points, Bales ended up with 14, six in the second half, Lucas had eight points and Wetherbee finished with five points.
Dufur hit 18 field goals and connected on 13 of 18 free throw attempts.
Dufur (11-10 overall, 8-4 league) hosts Condon-Wheeler at 6 p.m. Friday for senior night, and then heads out to Arlington for a re-scheduled game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
