The goal is to keep kids active during the fall months, so the timing of the Jumpstart Elementary School Cross Country Meet is perfect in many ways.
The event is sponsored by the Jumpstart Youth Organization and District 21 Physical Education Specialists.
It is free of charge and runs from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Sorosis Park.
The meet is open for children from kindergarten-through-fifth grades.
Ribbons are awarded to the top five placers in each age division, boys and girls.
Registration begins at 3 p.m. and is open for all kids within the Greater Columbia Gorge area.
Last year, Colonel Wright Elementary School took first place overall with 104 participants from kindergarten-through fifth grades.
Dry Hollow had 65 and Chenowith scored with 22 participants.
The kindergarten and first grade athletes start at 3:30 p.m.
Following that race, the second and third graders hit the grass for a 3:45 p.m. start.
The final race of the day pits the fourth and fifth graders at 4:10 p.m.
A ribbon presentation follows the fourth and fifth grade races.
The aim is to teach all aspects of cross country and overall health and an active lifestyle, so children develop a love of the sport early on.
Area athletes do not start competing in cross country runs until middle school, so this is a teaser for the youngsters as they try to find their niche in the upcoming years.
Volunteers are still needed to assist with registration, race tag duty, pickers, one timer, ribbon presenters and finish board duties.
