THE DALLES — The defending Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) girls soccer champion The Dalles High Riverhawks won two more contests last week to position them atop the six-team league standings.
The Riverhawks (4-0 TVC, 7-1 overall) notched a come-from-behind 4-3 win over host Gladstone on Oct. 1. The Gladiators, led by 2023 TVC player of the year, Tori Vera, built a 3-1 halftime margin. Led by sophomore forward Ariana Gonzalez (three goals), the Riverhawks overcame the two-goal deficit. Junior Natalia Elias also scored a goal. Sophomore midfielder/defender Yaritza Torres-Escobedo had an assist on the game-winning second half goal scored by Gonzalez.
“We’re winning in different ways, and it was nice to come from behind and get a win; that’s the first time we’ve done that in a game this year. It felt good to win at Gladstone for the first time. We had to kind of utilize a different strategy in order to defend against Veri, who is their best player," Coach Colby Tonn said.
“We had Willow Ziegenhagen guarding Veri. Once we made some adjustments, we were able to get more scoring opportunities. The girls just stuck with it and stayed together, and they just kept on playing the game well, and that’s what you have to do when you’re behind.”
The Riverhawks also won 1-0 on Oct. 3 versus Estacada. Sophomore midfielder Lilyana Gonzalez scored a goal in the 27th minute off a corner kick.
The Riverhawks played great team defense behind defenders Jamie Bastian Palacios, Bryce Newby, Abril Rincon, Kaiya Doty and Torres-Escobedo. The Riverhawks’ tandem of starting goalkeepers, Yadhira Cruz-Torres (save) and Olivia Prado, recorded just one save. (Prado didn’t touch the ball in the second half in goal behind her defensive teammates.)
