Russ Stevens of Griffin Construction got his warm up on Tuesday morning.
He was busily shoveling out debris left from excavation for new footings to support a level viewing area for wheelchairs at The Dalles Civic Auditorium.
As currently constructed, the Civic has a dramatic drop off when entering the theater section of the building.
However, that will all change in weeks to come.
Griffin’s Aaron Weatherall said The Dalles Concrete trucks would be showing up later in the day to poor footings that will support the viewing area. Additional concrete work will follow to create a platform that will be easily accessible for the disabled.
Weatherall, 43, said he had been on projects at the Civic for about a decade, helping with installing and removing chairs, removing lap and plaster and installing sheetrock, to name a few.
The 1921 building, at 323 E. Fourth St., has good “as-builts” said Weatherall, noting it provides details of where to locate structural beams and other integral parts of the building.
But does that mean he likes working on historic buildings?
“No,” he said with a laugh. “You have to really look at what you’re doing. It’s a challenge.”
Griffin Construction, based out of Prineville, has done a multitude of projects in Wasco and Sherman County during the past several years. They have a satellite office behind Devco Mechanical on Bargeway Road in The Port of The Dalles.
