The Wasco County Sheriff’s Posse played host to Bill Richey Aug. 1 and 3; the nationally-known trainer of mounted police units put on a de-spooking clinic.
The two-day clinic was open to equestrians from around the region.
“It’s not often that The Dalles is fortunate enough to get someone of Mr. Richey’s caliber to conduct a training clinic,” said Posse Captain Bill Getz. “With his guidance, we were able to ride our horses through a series of absolutely bizarre obstacles, as he was squirreling around in his police cruiser with lights flashing and sirens blaring. But the most exciting was when we rode through lines of fire.”
A resident of New York State with over 30 years of experience as a mounted police officer, Richey has participated in and won or placed in every national mounted police competition he has entered. In addition to training the Atlanta Police Mounted Unit for the 1996 Olympics, he trains equestrians from all over the United States and their mounts, to perform safely and professionally, from the trail to the show ring to Mardi Gras.
His training wouldn’t be complete without the help from his trusty canine sidekick, P.D., who has his own website with quite a following.
