Scam alert

The caller tells the person there’s a warrant for their arrest, but if they provide cash right away, they can avoid arrest. One scammer suggested meeting their target in a store parking lot for the exchange of cash.

“Nobody will call and say you need to go down and pay your bail on a warrant,” Waterbury said of legitimate police procedure. “Please be aware that these scam calls are really going on again and be very careful before you give money to anyone,” Waterbury said.

Waterbury said four people called local law agencies to report the calls, and two people reported them in person to the police department.

With that many reports to police, Waterbury said “there were probably many more that people never called us about.”

He said he hoped no one fell for the scam.
