MEDFORD (AP) — Medford schools reopened today with substitutes in the classrooms for striking teachers.
Schools had been closed since members of the Medford Education Association went on strike Thursday.
Superintendent Phil Long says schools are ready. The district plans a shortened four-hour school day.
The Mail Tribune reports substitutes are working with lesson plans left behind by regular Medford teachers who don’t want their students to fall behind during the strike.
The union represents about 600 teachers in a district of 13,000 students, Oregon’s eighth largest.
Contract talks resume Wednesday with a state mediator.
