Making textbooks affordable

JOHN SCHOPPERT HOLDS Open Source textbooks used at Columbia Gorge Community College, which cost students about $25 each and replace commercial textbooks priced at $185 each. The Gorge Open program, started in 2013, is helping teachers at the college adopt open source resources and has saved students over $35,000 in textbook costs in the past two years.

John Schoppert, director of library services at Columbia Gorge Community College, is on a mission to save students money.

For the past two years, Schoppert has worked with instructors at the college to help them shift from commercial textbooks to Open Education Resources.
