Lawmakers want more time on DUII legislation

The move on Thursday comes after House members promised to fight the proposal.

Under current law, Oregonians who enter court-approved diversion programs to avoid drunken driving convictions must have in-car alcohol monitoring devices installed.

The devices prevent an intoxicated person from starting the car.

The bill was originally intended to sort out how reports of device tampering and test failures are handled. But it drew opposition after a Senate panel added a provision allowing judges to make exceptions for some drivers.

The bill was sent to a committee, where a key proponent says it will die. Sen. Floyd Prozanksi says he’ll keep working on it after the Legislature adjourns.
