Jury: force in two fatal cases OK

The Roseburg News-Review reports that 56-year-old Gregory Allen Price of Sublimity died June 22 after an altercation with Roseburg police in front of the Douglas County Courthouse.

The district attorney’s office said Wednesday that the Douglas County grand jury heard two days of testimony before deciding police actions were justified in Price’s case.

The DA says an autopsy found heart problems, stress, methamphetamine use and excited delirium contributed to Price’s death.

The grand jury came to the same conclusion this week in the March 3 death of 26-year-old Walter Ray McKelvey of Canyonville.

Deputies said McKelvey was acting erratically and impeding traffic. They used stun guns to subdue him. The state medical examiner’s office found in an autopsy that meth intoxication, excited delirium and a brain cyst caused McKelvey’s death.
