Taggers have once again been targeting The Dalles with spray painted graffiti — some of it vulgar, some of it threatening — but those whose properties have been hit need not repaint or call a specialist, said Barbara Pizzola of A's Sewing.
“People getting all that spray paint and stuff, they can remove it themselves,” she said.
Pizzola has been selling commercial strength cleaning products for over 10 years, and stocks plenty of “Graffiti Off!”
“You spray it on, let it sit for a minute and clean it off with a scrubber,” she said.
The Dalles maintenance department uses it to clean the Lewis and Clark Festival Park bathrooms, where graffiti appears regularly. It works on dumpsters, walls, glass, vinyl — pretty much any surface subject to graffiti.
“It's a pretty simple product,” she said. It has a mild smell and — most importantly — it works. Pizzola had the opportunity to use it herself, when graffiti was spray painted on poles at the front of her store.
A's Sewing was purchased in 1979 by Pizzola's father, Earl Anderson, and moved to its current location, 422 E. Second Street, in 1984. Sewing machines, accessories and repair remain the mainstay of the business, but when a cleaning supply company located across the street closed around 2006, A's Sewing moved to fill the niche.
Paper products are a mainstay — in the summer they even deliver paper products to the migrant housing facilities at area orchards — as are window washing supplies. Professional waxes and floor strippers are also in stock.
In addition to those providing janitorial and maintenance services, many of her customers are simply homeowners “who just want to clean things up.”
“There are a lot of products you simply wont find in a box store,” she explained. “It's industrial strength.” Quality cleaners are easier to use, more efficient, and can clean more thoroughly, she said.
“I have people drive all the way up from Portland to buy Lightning,” she laughed. Lightning?
