Four horses and two mules that escaped their pasture are dead after being struck Friday by a big rig hauling potatoes in Sherman County.

The Oregon State Police says the animals were standing in the middle of U.S. Highway 97 when they were hit in the pre-dawn hours of Sept. 9.
