Share this article paywall-free Email Copy Link Four horses and two mules that escaped their pasture are dead after being struck Friday by a big rig hauling potatoes in Sherman County.The Oregon State Police says the animals were standing in the middle of U.S. Highway 97 when they were hit in the pre-dawn hours of Sept. 9.The driver of the truck was not hurt but the vehicle sustained severe damage to the front end.The animals had walked several miles to get to the highway from their pasture, say law enforcement officials.It's not clear how they escaped their enclosure.No enforcement action was taken against the truck driver or the owners of the animals.
