Marc Smith, a deputy with the Hood River County Sheriff's Office, was arrested for crimes relating to off-duty conduct Sept. 9.
Hood River County Sheriff Matt English was notified Sept. 8 of an incident involving Smith and alleged serious misconduct that was unrelated to Smith’s duties as a deputy.
English immediately placed Smith on administrative leave and then requested that the Oregon State Police conduct an investigation into the allegations.
On Friday, Smith was lodged at Northern Oregon Regional Corrections on charges of luring a minor, two counts of sexual abuse in the third degree, one count of public indecency and two counts of private indecency. At this time, the investigation is ongoing.
According to English, the goal of his agency is to be transparent with the public.
However, he noted that further release of information at this time could compromise the integrity and sensitive nature of this investigation.
The case has been referred to the Crook County District Attorney's office for prosecution.
English said of the case: , "While Mr. Smith's conduct happened off-duty, making certain that our organization maintains the highest standards of conduct and professionalism is paramount.
“I am committed to ensuring that our employees are held to the same standards as every citizen and that we are accountable for our actions whether on or off duty."
English went on to say, "This incident, while deeply disturbing, should not overshadow the hard work that is done by the professional men and women in our organization every day."
