Alex Hattenhauer said he had several ideas in mind with the Second Street Market.
He wanted to make the entrance to the Port of The Dalles attractive while at the same time giving his customers an exceptional experience.
Terry Turner, Katie Harrison, Jaymee Fuller and Kerry Walker with Hattenhauer Distribution Co. show off the new Second Street Market at 1433 West Second Street in The Dalles. The upscale convenience store offers a bevy of microbrews and some cool décor. The deli will eventually have some unique food items for folks on the go.

Alex Hattenhauer said he had several ideas in mind with the Second Street Market.
He wanted to make the entrance to the Port of The Dalles attractive while at the same time giving his customers an exceptional experience.
He also likes beer.
The convenience store, across the street from Casa El Mirador, accomplishes all three.
Family-owned Hattenhauer Distributing Co. has been serving parts of Oregon and Southern Washington for over 50 years. HDC owns and operates retail gas stations, commercial cardlocks, convenience stores, drive thru espresso and fast food concepts.
But this new store is quite a change from their convenience stores – both in appearance and services.
“We’re trying to be unique to The Dalles,” Alex said, noting his beer selection offers a vast variety of micro brews that are made within a 100-mile radius of The Dalles.
“I am a fan of microbrews,” Alex said. “So, we put all the vendors together and sorted through all the brands. We will be rotating in seasonal varieties.”
Buoy, Everyday Brewing, and Worthy are a few of the brands you can find in a can in their walk-in beer section. Budweiser and macros are also handy. Six packs to half racks - it’s all there.
And the store has been upgraded with an industrial feel – leveled and stained concrete floors, exposed venting, vaulted ceilings, and painted block walls give the store an open and inviting appeal.
Terry Turner, Hattenhauer product and sales development guru, has been pouring his heart into the store. “It’s out of respect to our consumers. This is the experience people deserve.”
During the next two months, the store will also open a deli, offering menu items and high-top tables so customers can grab a sandwich and beverage, enjoy the store, and be on their way in 10 minutes.
In addition, Alex said the store is a smoke-free business with no tobacco offerings.
Store Manager Kerry Walker has been receiving reviews.
“We’re getting a lot of positive feedback,” she said. Kerry, who has been with Hattenhauer for more than two years, said she came from a food service background, including Subway and Carolyn’s Restaurant in White Salmon. She plans to put her expertise to use in the deli.
Property values continue to rise with population increase and limited land in The Dalles with talk of Google’s eventual build out and other companies sniffing around the old rodeo grounds in the port. Consequently, standards of operation and decor are changing. Those are clear in this new store.
“We’ve been sleepy for a long time,” Alex said of The Dalles. “But people are starting to see the opportunity here.”
