‘Distinguished Service’ nominee names sought

The categories include: Outstanding Woman of the Year; Outstanding Man of the Year; Outstanding Volunteer of the Year; the Agriculture Person of the Year; Outstanding Youth Award; Business of the Year Award; Educator of the Year (from any school in The Dalles); and the First Responder of the Year, which are given out to people who “have gone above and beyond the call of duty in any particular incident and has shown exemplary bravery or skill.”

Lisa Farquharson, president and CEO of the chamber, said the awards are based on the individual’s civic and community involvement; his or her social and economic impact in the community; his or her leadership qualities; and overall community service.

“This is a time that means so much to me personally, as we have the opportunity to honor and thank those people who have continually given to our community,” she said. “It is a fun and exciting evening to celebrate what makes The Dalles an amazing place to live.”

Farquharson added that the awards have been an important part of the community for many decades.

“We have records that The Dalles Area Chamber has been a part of the Distinguished Citizens Award banquet dating back to 1945,” she said. “It has been called by many different names, but its purpose has always been to recognize those businesses, individuals, service groups, and community members who have given back to their communities and businesses with passion and a heart of giving.”

Mayor Steve Lawrence said he believes the annual ceremony helps boost the entire city by recognizing the impact the efforts of a few individuals can have on the community’s fortunes.

“These awards are so important because they honor professionalism,” Lawrence said.

Chuck Covert, who was named the Chamber’s Man of the Year last year, said it’s important to show appreciation for those who help the community.

“It’s a great thing to recognize these people,” said Covert, who owns NAPA Auto Parts in The Dalles. “Anything we can do to recognize people, they appreciate it. Saying thanks – we don’t always get to do that enough.”

Those selected for the awards will be honored at the Chamber’s annual banquet, to be held Jan. 18 at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center.
