It’s rare to find the culprits in a burglary, but an alert neighbor helped lead police to a suspect who was recently charged in connection with three burglaries in The Dalles.
Pedro Ayala Solorio, 21, of 3125 Gilhouley Rd., Odell, was indicted by a Wasco County grand jury last week on eight counts: three counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of theft and two counts of criminal mischief.
The Dalles Police Detective Steve Rue said some neighbors saw suspicious activity at a residence and the man wrote down the license plate of the associated vehicle and also got a glimpse of the suspect.
The vehicle was traced to a residence in Odell, where police were granted entry by the renter. There, they found a considerable amount of stolen property, Rue said, including a 60-inch flat screen TV that was plugged in and being used by the occupants.
The burglaries were of residences off Mt. Hood Street, one on the east side of Sorosis Park and another off Union Street, Rue said. They occurred between July 1 and July 3.
Items stolen included electronics ranging from stereo systems to TVs to laptop computers, he said. Other items found included GPS units.
Entry was gained to the homes by kicking in back doors, Rue said.
When police contacted Solorio, he told them the items police found were brought over by a friend, “However, he indicated he knew the items were stolen,” Rue said. Solorio was arrested without incident.
Some of the burglary victims have already been able to retrieve their property, Rue said.
Rue lauded the alert neighbor. “This is why being very observant of your neighborhood and knowing your neighbors and at least having an idea of people’s normal day to day routine, that’s very important because without the public’s help, it’s hard for us to catch people -- burglars and thieves -- in the act.”
Rue said there are indications the suspect was committing the burglaries while visiting his girlfriend’s family in The Dalles.
The investigation is continuing, he said. The burglaries happened from early evening to nighttime, and all the homes were unoccupied. He was charged with two counts of criminal mischief because he is accused of kicking in doors to the residences, said Wasco County District Attorney Eric Nisley. One of the doors at one of the burglary sites was not damaged, he said, explaining why there were only two counts of criminal mischief.
Solorio is on probation in Hood River County for delivery of methamphetamine, Rue said.
