THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks were on the verge of getting a big victory on Sept. 26 versus Philomath before the visiting Warriors scored 27 unanswered points for a 48-21, Class 4A nonleague football win.
The highlight of the game was when Riverhawk sophomore running back Bryson Cates (28 carries, 185 yards rushing, two TDs) scored on an impressive 89-yard touchdown run. The Dalles senior placekicker London Leitz kicked the point-after for a 21-21 deadlock with 6:24 left in the third quarter.
However, that was the turning point of the contest, as the Riverhawk offense came to a screeching halt and failed to score again in the contest.
The Warriors (3-1) had early momentum as they scored two touchdowns for a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. The Riverhawks (2-2) responded with a second quarter scoring drive to trim the margin. Senior receiver Reese Kinslow (two catches, 44 yards receiving) capped the offensive possession with a 36-yard touchdown catch on a pass from senior quarter Logan Mitchell (64 yards passing). A PAT by Leitz made it 14-7 with 6:30 left until halftime.
Following a stalled offensive series by the Warriors, the Riverhawks tied the game on their next offensive possession. An eight-play, 49-yard drive capped by a 17-yard Cates touchdown run and an extra point by Leitz knotted the game, 14-14, with 2:09 left before halftime. The Warriors answered quickly on their ensuing possession as they returned the Riverhawk kickoff by Leitz for a touchdown.
The Riverhawks came out of the locker room with momentum following halftime. Following an exchange of possessions, the Riverhawks scored on a three-play drive, highlighted by the long touchdown run by Cates for the 21-21 deadlock.
The Riverhawks were unable to slow the Warrior offense in the second half, falling behind 35-21 after three quarters. Philomath outgained The Dalles in total offense 369 yards to 256 yards. It marked the second straight loss for the Riverhawks.
The game was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., but it was delayed until 7:30 because Philomath arrived late at the Wahtonka Campus field.
The Riverhawks will be seeking to snap a two-game losing streak when they face the winless Woodburn High Bulldogs (0-4) in a nonleague at contest Woodburn High.
