The young tumblers at Riverside Gymnastics Academy in The Dalles are in full swing with the fall competitive season, and representing Hood River in the group are athletes Poppy Miller, Jacy Johnston, Regina Sanchez-Macias, Audrey Fuentes, Sophia Riviello and Ava Krentz.
The girls recently competed in their third event of the season, the Oregon Trail meet held Oct. 18 at Riverside’s facility.
Highlighting results from the contest, Miller finished second in the Level 5 All-around, with scores of 8.8 vault, 8.7 bars, 9.1 beam and 8.75 floor. At level 4, Johnston won the All-around title after scoring 8.7 on the vault, 8.45 on the bars, 9.075 on the beam and 9.05 on the floor.
“Poppy Miller has really blossomed into a very strong gymnast,” Coach Jacque Johnston commented. “All her hard work in the gym is evident in her performances at the competitions. I’m very proud of the progress she has made.”
Meanwhile, coach Johnston said, “Jacy continues to be a very consistent gymnast on all four events, with beam and floor being her strongest, which has resulted her placing on the podium in all three competitions so far this year.”
At the same meet, Sanchez-Macias finished with scores of 8.625 vault, 8.85 bars, 8.8 beam and 8.7 floor in the Level 4 contest. Fuentes, Krentz and Riviello competed in the Level 3 group and were highlighted by Fuentes’ second place All-around finish, with a high schore of 9.3 on the floor. Krentz’s high score was a 9.25 on the bars and Riviello posted a high of 9.45 for her performance on the vault.
The gymnasts will continue to train and improve with the ultimate goal of competing and peaking at the Oregon State Gymnastics Championship, held in Clackamas first weekend of December. Between now and then they have three more competitions, all in the Portland area.
