WHITE SALMON — Columbia High, led by freshman Eda O’Connor, will send three girls wrestlers to this weekend’s WIAA Mat Classic XXXVI based on their finishes at the Feb. 14-15 District 4 1B/2B/1A tournament in Montesano.
The Bruins’ three-member team placed 14th out of 27 teams with 52 points at district. Montesano won the title. O’Connor finished second in the 110-pound weight division, winning twice by fall before losing in the final to Lillianna Galeana of Forks. O’Connor, who scored 30 of Columbia’s district team points, is 23-9 this season.
At 145 pounds, freshman Sage Lofgren placed fourth and scored 16 team points. Lofgren won one of three wrestled matches, losing by sudden victory in the third-place match to Patience Sterling of Fort Vancouver.
Senior Caroline Meinzer was sixth at 155 pounds for Columbia.The WIAA girls 1B/2B/1A state tourney is Feb. 21-22 at the Tacoma Dome.
Five Bruin boys wrestlers qualify for state tourney
District runners-up Razo Salazar and Matthias Posini will lead a five-wrestler contingent for Columbia High into the 2025 WIAA Mat Classic XXXVI boys state wrestling tournament Feb. 21-22 at the Tacoma Dome.
The first four finishers in each weight class at the Sub District 4 1A Trico wrestling championship Feb. 8 at LaCenter High School automatically qualified for the Mat Classic. For CHS that also included Everett Coyner (third at district 165 pounds), Giovanni Ruiz (fourth at 126 pounds), and Holden Uffelman (fourth at 157).
Columbia’s four fifth-place finishers at district competed Feb. 15 in a one-match wrestle-off for berths into the state tourney. Neither Wyatt Pulido (132 pounds), Robert Grabb IV (150), Colt Calloway (165), nor Juan Cortes (175) would advance to state from the mini-tourney in Montesano.
